Fonio is a cereal grain that is native to West Africa and is known for its many nutritional benefits:

Appearance

Fonio is a small-seeded annual grass with slender stems and leaves that can grow up to 6 inches long. The grain is white to pale brown or purplish in color and is about 0.5 mm long.

Growth

Fonio is a fast-growing crop that can mature in six to eight weeks. It can thrive in poor soil and drought conditions without irrigation or fertilizer.

Uses

Fonio is used to make porridge, couscous, and beers. Fonio flour can be used as a gluten-free substitute for wheat flour in baking.

Nutrition

Fonio is a good source of fiber, iron, B vitamins, zinc, and magnesium. It's also gluten free and has a high calcium content.

Types

The two main types of fonio are white fonio (Digitaria exilis) and black fonio (Digitaria iburua). White fonio is more widely cultivated, while black fonio is mainly grown in Nigeria.
