Red palm oil (RPO) is an edible oil that comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree, and is known for its high levels of antioxidants and nutrients:

RPO is dark red in color due to its high levels of carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene. 

Taste

In its unprocessed state, RPO has a strong, pungent taste and smells like overripe mushrooms. 

Nutrients

RPO is a good source of antioxidants, including vitamin E and carotenoids, as well as phytosterols, squalene, gums, phospholipids, and CoQ10. 

Uses

RPO is often used in traditional cooking and is sometimes used to treat vitamin A deficiency in low-income regions. 

Health impacts

While RPO may offer some health benefits, its high saturated fat content means that its health impacts must be considered carefully. Consuming too much RPO can cause weight gain, liver toxicity, and carotenodermia.
